A DRIVER in California was killed when a cow smashed through the windscreen of his pick-up truck.

The 750lb heifer had wandered on to a road about 50 miles north-east of San Francisco during a storm and was hit by a car. It was hurled into the air and landed on the truck travelling in the other direction, killing the driver. It was then thrown back on to the road and was hit by another truck.

The driver of the car and the second truck were unhurt. Police believe the heifer was killed in the first impact. A Highway Patrol officer said: "This is about as freaky an accident as you can imagine."
