Filed at 9:50 a.m. EDT CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- A shark killed a 14-year-old boy Thursday while he surfed at Buffels Bay near Cape Town, police said. Hercules Pretorius and a friend were about 50 yards from shore when the shark attacked Pretorius on his right side, Capt. Eddie Cronje, a police spokesman, said. The friend helped the boy reach shore, but that he died before medical assistance arrived, Cronje said. Shark attacks are not rare in South African waters, particularly against surfers, whose motions in the water often resemble those of the sharks' traditional prey. |
