5 Year-old bitten to death by pet canine

Sunday, October 22, 2000

A pet 100-pound gray canine, described by officials as 85 percent wolf, killed a 5-year-old boy Saturday in the back yard of his grandmother's rural Ohio home, authorities said. Chief Jim Hughes of the Miami Township Fire Department said the boy apparently died about 9:30 a.m. of several bite wounds. The boy, who had been visiting his grandmother, wandered into the area where the animal was chained before any adults realized what had happened, Hughes said. The boy was identified as Oberem Burgin of Cincinnati. Officials said the case would remain under investigation. A relative shot the female animal to death, the chief said.
