GIRL, 4, HOSPITALIZED AFTER PIT BULL ATTACK

Thursday, October 5, 2000

A Northwest Side teenager was arrested Wednesday after his two pit bull terriers attacked and injured a 4-year-old girl while she was walking with her grandmother.

Police said a neighbor saw the dogs attack the girl and 70-year-old Josephine Echeverria about 3:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Kedvale Avenue.

Police said the neighbor shot both dogs, killing one and seriously injuring the other. Moments later, the neighbor called police and officers shot and killed the injured dog shortly after they arrived, according to Alice Casanova, a police spokeswoman.

The owner of the pit bulls, 17-year-old Enrique Culto of the 1700 block of North Kedvale Avenue, has been charged with reckless conduct, Casanova said.

The 4-year-old girl suffered lacerations to her legs, face and right ear during the attack and was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital. She was in stable condition late Wednesday, Casanova said.

Echeverria was treated at the hospital and released, Casanova said.
