RAMONA --  A 2-year-old boy was bitten Monday evening by a 12-inch rattlesnake that was in his toy box, authorities said.

The boy reached into the box to put away some toys and was bitten on his
left index finger about 5:40 p.m., the Ramona Fire Department said. The
family's home, on the 1800 block of Black Canyon Road, is being remodeled and there are several openings to the outside, said David Latham, fire engineer/paramedic.

"The finger was just a little bit swollen when we got there," Latham said.
"By the time we got to the hospital, he was swollen, black and blue up to
the middle of his forearm."

The boy was treated with antivenin and released yesterday morning,
officials said. The snake was killed.
