Shark takes swimmer at city beach

Monday November 6, 2000

A man has been killed and another injured in a shark attack today at Perth's Cottesloe Beach, police said.

Emergency services were called about 6.30am (WST) after reports a shark had attacked two people at the popular city beach.

One man aged in his 40s died at the scene and another man was taken to hospital, police said. His condition was unknown.

Police evacuated the beach after the attack and water police were trying to find the shark.

Today's attack is the second at the beach in recent years.

In October 1997 two men escaped uninjured when a five-metre shark - believed to be a white pointer - bit their surf-ski in half 200 metres off Cottesloe.

Early last month Perth beachgoers were warned to take care after two sharks - one believed to be a white pointer - were spotted off northern beaches. - AAP
