Sunday, September 24, 2000

A day-long search has failed to find any sign of the body of a shark attack victim on South Australia's far west coast.

A 4.5 metre great white shark took a 25-year-old New Zealand surfer off Cactus Beach, 600-kilometres north west of Adelaide.

The attack occurred about 7:30am.

Police and State Emergency Service volunteers are now patrolling a 5 kilometre stretch of coast near where the attack took place. .

Witnesses say the man was alone in a calm sea when the shark attacked.

The man's wife has been treated at the Ceduna District Hospital for severe shock.

The search will continue until nightfall and resume again tomorrow.
